Oral history interview with Leon J. Amon, Oct. 1, 2002.

Amon discusses his family and the Yesler Way area but focuses on his father's restaurants and card rooms. Albert Amon opened his first establishment at 16th Avenue and Yesler Way, in what was the center of the Turkish Sephardic communtiy at that time. The establishment was a gathering place for Sephardic men who would drink Turkish coffee and play cards, backgammon, or dominoes. There was no hard gambling, and no food was sold except for one yogurt delicacy. Leon Amon recalls obtaining the city license for the restaurant in his own name when he was just 14 years old. Albert Amon moved his business to 20th and Yesler circa 1927, as the Sephardic population was moving eastward. Other businesses mentioned are Morris Tacher's Cozy Corner Restaurant, the Alhadeff family's Palace Fish at Pike Place Market, and Abraham Berg's card room. Amon also relates some of his family history.
